Bequia….. Before I came cruising, I had absolutely ZERO idea that the island of Bequia even existed. While I struggled to truly appreciate this island on our first time around, my eyes are opened this time. I’m convinced this is the island people think of when they think “A Caribbean Paradise”. No really, let me set the scene for you.
– A soft sand beach!
– Gin clear water (sometimes it looks like the dinghy is free floating in air).
– Flowers floating by in the gin clear water.
– A cool hut, selling cold beer out of a cooler.
– Sailboats bobbing idyllically at anchor.
– Cool tradewinds offsetting the wonderful Caribbean sun.
That is Bequia…
However, its more than that.. So much more. The people here are also fantastic. Its an island small enough where “fly in” tourism is not a big thing. As such the people not only appreciate the “yatchies”, but treat them as friends, even temporary citizens! Its really not something we have experienced since the outer islands of the Bahamas! So you can bet yer ass we said “Yes” when the owner of one of the local businesses invited us to participate in “Reading Club”.
Not everyone was so pumped in the beginning!
Ok… Maybe 2 people weren’t pumped…
Dammit.. All three!
Ok.. One crewmate got pumped and down to work.
I made sure the beer at the establishment was up to par. There are only 1 or 2 readers who will know what I’m showing in this picture.. Turns out we anchored next to famous boat.
Once the reading started, everyone perked up!
Daph was more excited to do the drawing. Bobby… Tell Lauren that Daph is still drawing dragons (not great ones yet). Some readers will notice the cool necklace gifted by Grateful (fair winds, my friends).
Our fantastic host and the owner of The Fig Tree is involved all day long!
The “Presentations”… The kids had to describe the book they read.
Again.. Our fantastic host Cheryl making sure no one was left out!
My view from the sidelines.. Red arrow showing POF.
I know… I know.. You thought I was full of crap about the water.. Nope.. Its like this all the way out to our boat.
OH YA.. The best part.. Fig Tree has its own little pack.. This one thought my foot was a good snuggle spot.. He was even cuter in person. Although he was a wire hair, it was very soft! Dammit, I would have stole him, but Rhonda still has a strict “NO DOGS ON THE BOAT” policy (NOTE… Guest dogs are always allowed, just no forever dogs).
P.S. I wouldn’t really steal him!
